About the Project
This project represents the first draft of a sound design concept for a film exploring intense themes of mental health, trauma, and suicide, set for further development in 2025. Designed specifically for the film’s initial picture lock, which includes no color grading, this draft establishes an immersive auditory experience that mirrors the protagonist’s mental state through minimal but powerful sound design.
In crafting the opening scene, I used a layered tinnitus effect to create disorientation, combining low and high frequencies to simulate hearing impairment. This unsettling audio choice is meant to challenge the listener, amplifying the protagonist's distress. Throughout, I incorporated expansive reverbs, deep bass EQ, and precise timing adjustments to further disorient the audience, using these elements to convey moments of instability and vulnerability.
Drawing on techniques from foley artist Leslie Bloome, I focused on capturing even the subtlest ambient sounds, emphasizing silence to build tension and emotional depth. To enhance the character’s voice, I layered recordings from a C414 Gold for clarity and a Rode NTG3 for added atmospheric reverb. This dual-layer approach adds texture to the voiceover, supporting the film’s narrative flow while creating a sense of immersion.
This draft sets the foundation for a fully developed soundscape that will continue evolving in future stages, aiming to create an intimate, disorienting experience that pulls audiences deeper into the protagonist’s emotional journey.
