Mixtape

About the Project

As part of project 2, we were tasked with creating an EP from scratch with a mixture of recorded and programmed/produced elements. ‘Mixtape’ is the name of the EP consisting of two tracks ‘Nightmare’ and ‘Solitude’. Mixtapes were all the hype back in the 1970s and even held their own in the early 2000s. But with the rise of CDs and digital audio, physical mixtapes became obsolete. This project is our take on the term 'Mixtape' with the essential difference being, high-quality audio. A mix of two genres, but a product of one unified team. Side A:- Solitude Side B:- Nightmare

Project Nominated

1. Best EMP Track: Our project meets all requirements. 'Solitude' was produced using Ableton Live 11 with minimal recorded elements, inspired by 'Glitch' by Martin Garrix. 'Nightmare' is mostly electronically produced using Logic Pro X and has a mix of live and programmed elements. Background sampled elements were chopped up vocal samples and percussive elements were reprogrammed after vocal melodies were introduced.

2. Best Recorded Music Track: 'Nightmare' features predominantly vocal and recorded guitar elements. While the guitars were initially programmed, the decision to record them live using stereo recording techniques added a human element to the song. The production process included replacing MIDI guitars with recorded ones, before recording final vocals and entering the mixing and mastering phase.

3. Best Music Mix: 'Nightmare' underwent several iterations before achieving its final form. The song has a clean and clear placement of different sounds, and an atmospheric presence when listened to using headphones. The mixing process focused on highlighting every element, programmed or recorded, to allow listeners to discover new sounds in each section of the song. While each element is distinct, they blend cohesively to avoid burying any sound.
